Jerry's Movie Reviews:
Blow
This movie was good. Johnny Dep on Coke what more do I have to say. He does a good job playing screwed up people. How hard can that be. I wouldn't give him an Oscar for the film because his character was static but he did a good job playing the role. This movie was very realistic. It did a good job of portraying the drug industry as it is. Fun when you're not getting caught but sucks when you do. Dep plays the part of a kid caught up in a dream not wanting to be stuck without money like his father so he gets involved in selling drugs. First he starts with Pot and then moves up into Cocaine. Well along the way he's arrested once or twice. If you've seen the Doors some of the movie reminds me of bits and pieces except the star winds up in prison in the end living his days hallucinating about his daughter whom he hasn't seen in 20 years. Entertaining and somewhat silly at times. It's an entertaining film it's missing something. Maybe a character who shoots people. The director did a good job in not portraying the drug industry as violent although kids who see this movie won't be frightened away from selling drugs because they'll come away from the movie thinking that if they do get caught they'll have to go to prison to water flowers. Scarface was much more realistic but I'm not reviewing that film right now. Anyway Dep starts selling Pot with his highschool buddy after moving out to California. They make a nice amount of money and then Dep falls in love with a beautiful pot head who ends up dying with cancer. Well he then ends up going to prison and befriends a drug fiend who knows all about Cocaine. Dep learns about how to import Cocaine into the country and he does. Then He steals another Dealers Fiance, marries her and into Cocaine bliss. Parties and crack and then he gets shot in the arm and his connection is lost. He loses his closest friends and gives up on dealing. One night a few years later,(let me just say that Pee-Wee Herman is in this movie playing a cocaine dealing hairdresser), his wife throws him a party and the party is busted with 1 pound or Ounce of Cocaine. Anyway he goes back to jail finds out that all his drug money is gone and he's broke. He gets out, his wife hates him and then divorces him yada yada yada. He goes to jail for life and winds up an old man fantasizing about seeing his daughter. Sad, realistic story. Three stars and maybe a nomination for the Dep's father for doing a good job as supporting actor.
